Explorer Scout Leader

Main responsibilities
  • Plan and lead a high-quality, youth-shaped programme of outdoor and adventurous activities for the Explorers. This should take into account the needs, interests and abilities of the Explorers and build on activities provided by the Group, Scout District, County and Nationally
  • Plan and deliver Chief Scout’s Platinum / Bronze DofE level training and expeditions
  • In conjunction with Surrey County, support the planning and delivery of Chief Scout’s Diamond and Queen’s Scout Award / Silver and Gold DofE level training and expeditions
  • Support the achievement of the Scouts Top Awards, such as the Queen’s Scout Award
  • Ensure the safe delivery of the programme, especially in accordance with the Scouts safeguarding, safety and risk assessment requirements
  • Lead and develop the team of adult volunteers that supports the Unit
  • Lead on the administration of Explorers’ and Leaders’ membership, badge and activity records

The Scouts provides a training programme that will help a person take up this role.

Personal attributes
  • Good with teenagers, gaining satisfaction from their development and achievements
  • Good skills and experience in hiking, navigating and camping in open and wild country
  • Organised
  • Positively enjoys hiking and camping in the rain!

Assistant Explorer Scout Leader

Main responsibilities
  • The AESL supports the ESL in all their responsibilities and should be able to deputise for them on occasion. AESLs focus on the planning and delivery of the activity programme, They may carry out some administration responsibilities

The Scouts provides the same training programme to AESLs as to ESLs. This will help a person take up this role.

Personal attributes
  • Good with teenagers, gaining satisfaction from their development and achievements
  • Some skills and experience in hiking, map reading and camping are desirable. There will be plenty of opportunities to develop these skills
  • Positively enjoys hiking and camping in the rain!

Explorer Unit Administration Assistant

Main responsibilities
  • Administer the Explorers’ and Leaders’ membership, contact, badge and activity records. This includes enrolment records for each activity, and DofE and Scout Award records
  • Book venues and facilities for activities
Personal attributes
  • Computer literacy essential
  • Organised
  • No need to enjoy hiking or camping, in any weather. This role is for those who prefer the warm indoors
